A day in the life of a Traffic & Scheduling Professional

Post by

Before we deep dive into a day in my life, let me quickly introduce myself.

Hello, I’m Jessica! A few things to know about me: I’m fully caffeinated 90% of the time, I’m a boy band fanatic (will always choose BSB), and I’m currently the only Canadian member on the team! I’m a firm believer in the law of attraction and always trying my best to lead with a grateful heart. I’m the Director of Traffic and Scheduling and I’ve been with bspoketv since June 2020. Thanks for taking the time to hear about my day.

There are some events that go down before I jump into my office chair. I try to keep my morning routines the same and use it as a way to get my day/week started off on a positive note. When the alarm goes off at 5am, I pack my bag, roll up my mat and off to the hot yoga studio I go. When I return home, I get myself ready, make a super yummy latte, eat breakfast, write in my journal, then read the day's top news headlines.

Now the work day begins! First, I log onto my computer, read any unread Slack messages or new emails, and turn bspoketv on the DistroTV app. I like to keep the channel playing in the background to ensure shows are running smoothly and to get familiar with our creators! My days are usually pretty similar but can change from day-to-day. As the Director of Traffic & Scheduling I am in charge of just that - the traffic and scheduling of the channel. Creating/updating episodes and scheduling shows is what I spend the majority of my day working on.

Each episode that airs gets thoughtfully put together. The first step is to input information like the episode title, description, and any images associated with the show. Next, I insert our show segments in the correct order before filling the 30 min (or 60 min) episode with current commercials, new trailers, existing promos, ads etc. I go through each episode every week to make sure it is ready for the next step, scheduling!

Scheduling is also another task that fills most of the day. Using our Programming Grid, I carefully schedule shows to air accordingly to match this guide. This part of the job requires a great amount of planning, focus and being detail oriented!

Though updating episodes and scheduling our programming are two main aspects of my role, there are other assignments I work on as well. As I’m writing this, it’s the middle of September which means it’s time to start drafting bspoketv’s October Programming Grid. This is a fun task as I get to plan out the month and get excited for what’s to come, like all the series premiers! Other tasks in my day-to-day include completing and refreshing our VOD libraries, overseeing schedules, keeping track of commercials coming in/out, and prepping content needed for future days, weeks, and months.

I wrap up every work day doing a final check on the following days. Evenings after 5pm always look so different for me. On a quiet night I like to keep things light and simple. I’ll catch up on reality tv, read a book, and write in my journal again. Sleep is also super important to me, so I try to be in bed early to get as much sleep as possible, before a brand new day begins!

If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed hearing about my day and be sure to watch our channel on any platform you can!
